Private coaching
Tell me about your sailing story and goals.
I can help you choose the right format, whether that is a few hours of own-boat coaching, a full day, liveaboard training, or a comprehensive training plan.
Common private training goals
Where private training helps most.
Private training steps in when a traditional course is not quite the right fit, or when you want coaching built around your own boat, your family, your certificate goals, or a specific skill gap.
01
I own a boat, but there are gaps I want to close
Useful when you want focused help with docking, close-quarters handling, passage planning, advanced sail trim, emergency procedures, or any skill gap that would make your time on the water safer, more confident, and more enjoyable.
02
I am getting into a new boat
Useful when you want to learn the boat, her handling, systems, and safety equipment, and build good habits from day one instead of trial and error.
03
I want my partner or family to enjoy sailing
Useful when teaching your own family might bring more stress than results.
I can help everyone build safe habits, work as a team, and enjoy sailing so that they want to come sailing with you again.
04
I need focused coaching toward a certificate or exam
Let me help you prepare for a skipper license, Yachtmaster exams, or Instructor assessment.
Also helpful if you are planning to charter in Europe (Croatia being particularly popular) and need to gain an ICC (International Certificate of Competence).
05
I want a bigger sailing goal made manageable
Useful when you are preparing for night sailing, going cruising, charter abroad, or a Grand Voyage and want a practical training plan that gets you to the start line ready and confident.
IYT certification by private training
Private coaching can lead to internationally recognized IYT certificates.
For experienced sailors, private training can be used to prepare for or challenge IYT certifications, including International Crew, International Bareboat Skipper + ICC, and advanced IYT routes by inquiry.
If you already have significant skippering experience and prerequisites, I can run an approved 2-day International Bareboat Skipper + ICC challenge format. We work through and assess the practical syllabus in an accelerated private-training format and you gain your license upon successful completion.
Private training paths
This might be for you if you are:
A sailboat owner wishing to bring their experience on water to the next level
You’ve been sailing for quite a while, own a boat, maybe took part in a sailing course in the past. However, there are skills and areas of knowledge where you feel like there is much more to learn.
Be it docking, rope work, passage planning, sail trim, or emergency procedures, I am here to help you develop your skills so that you can have a safer, more confident, and more enjoyable time on water.
Getting in a new boat and you prefer to learn the lines and build safe habits with expert guidance
You are getting a boat! Congratulations! Maybe one of the most exciting times – but there is SO much to learn, it’s almost overwhelming.
You search the web, you buy the books, you watch the videos. But when you come onboard, nothing can even come close to hands on experience.
You want to learn to do things right, efficiently, and safely.
I will help you build safe habits, from winch handling, passage planning, taking your boat in and out of your berth, raising the sails, getting where you want to get to safely, crew management, emergency scenarios, anchoring and rules of the road.
I can take you through a boat inspection, all the systems onboard and safety equipment. As an experienced engineer, I can make a comprehensive maintenance & improvement list for your vessel.
We can go from the very basics to getting closer to sailing mastery if you wish.
I will give you the tools that will enable you to truly ENJOY the potential your boat brings.
And with that – the endless horizons, freedom, sundowners in secluded coves and the thrill of feeling alive when the wind carries the ocean spray into your face.
Looking to take your partner or family sailing and you are unsure whether teaching them yourself is a very good idea
You are fairly confident in your own skills, but have a pressing feeling that teaching your family sailing might bring more stress than results. You want to make sure they enjoy it so that they come sailing with you again.
I am here to take them through the safe habits, and teach you all how to work as a team. As a third party, I am in a position where it might be easier for them to accept advice. And hey, maybe you will pick up a thing or two along the way as well!
Chartering a boat and would like to hire an expert skipper who would also teach you along the way
Maybe you are not sure yet if you are happy to take charge of a new big charter boat, or maybe this is your first time sailing.
Maybe you don’t own a boat, or can’t get onto a sailing course because all the schools are booked up.
Maybe neither of the above is true for you, and you just want to enjoy your holiday without the responsibility or worry about your anchor slipping in the middle of the night.
I can arrange a charter for you, and take you for a holiday of a lifetime. And if you wish to learn along the way, even better!

Preparing for a skipper license exam
Whether your ambition is to make sailing your job taking a Yachtmaster Offshore exam, or you are hoping to get your first skipper’s license and charter somewhere warm, I can take you through all the pre-requisites so that you can let your skills shine with confidence.
Yacht Master Class can now issue the full range of IYT certifications, including the sought after IYT International Bareboat Skipper and ICC (International Certificate of Competence)
An already experienced skipper looking for coaching to push your envelope further
Have you been sailing for quite a while now? Or maybe all your life? Then you probably feel, that the more you know, the more there is to learn. Dive deep enough into a subject as complex as sailing, and it becomes true. For myself included.
I have been coaching sailors of all skill levels, from beginners to Yachtmaster candidates, and recently also training new RYA Instructors. I have coached ASA instructors, Navy, and Coast Guard members. Many of them had more water time than me, and I was lucky enough to learn from them as well.
I will observe where you are at and offer you feedback if there is room to improve, or offer alternative approaches. From advanced sail trim, various docking scenarios, MOB drills, picking up mooring under sail, passage planning, night sailing and more, this will be both fun and educational.
In need of a boat delivery service
I provide both regular and cruising deliveries, with or without the owner onboard, but if you wish to tag along and learn on the way, I’ll be thrilled.
If you are interested in learning during delivery, I can provide crew, and I always strive to deliver the boat to the destination on time, clean, and in a better shape than when we set off.
Upon completion, I will also provide a comprehensive list of maintenance suggestions. Think of it as a complimentary survey!
Struggling with maintenance
Most boats will have a maintenance list a mile long. Feeling a little lost in it? I can help!
With a background in engineering, and close to a decade of experience in maintaining both mine and school fleet boats, I can take you through most maintenance tasks – in a way that you will be able to do them yourself in the future.
I can also make a personal survey of your vessel and give you a suggested maintenance list, in order of priorities.
Looking for an adventure experience builder
Perhaps you’d like a bigger challenge than a sailing vacation?
Each year I organize a limited number of sailing adventures that focus on building experience that you might not get on a sailing holiday or on a sailing school course. Longer distance itineraries, night sailing, watch systems, geographical breadth of experience. All in exclusive areas and with expert tuition, but also with a chance to try things out yourself.
Excited to try night sailing
Night sailing is my favourite!
It comes with it’s own set of challenges, be it with respects to navigation, crew safety, collision regulations, or comfort.
Sooner or later, even if you plan for day sails only, the weather, tide, boat, or yourself will force you to sail into the night.
I can help you be prepared for that – moreover, possibly even excited!
Preparing for a Grand Voyage
Offshore cruise? Across an ocean? Or around the World?
If the prep list and skill demands become overwhelming, I can help you prepare yourself, your crew, and your boat. Maybe you just need a little help with a topic or two you are unsure about. Maybe you want to develop your skills all the way.
Send me a message with the details and I can come up with a tailored training plan to get you to the start line ready and confident!
